HAVANA TWISTS

HAVANA TWISTS
I remember when these came out, everyone was wearing them.  I even saw a post with a picture of the style, and the question was asked what were they?  Also stating that they were not Senegalese Twists or was Afro Kinky Hair used.

 Style By: Maria Thompson
Fort Lauderdale Natural Hair Stylist

I left a comment asking her to bring the hair used and I would see if I  could replicate the style.  She came over I did a demo on my mannequin, and to her astonishment she said "its exactly the same!"  I said yes, that's because its a Senegalese Twist using Afro Kinky Hair, the same hair I have over there on the stand!!

You see, Havanna Twists is just the name of the style, Senegalese Twists is the name of the technique.  Afro Kinky Hair, Marley Hair, Kinky Hair, etc can be used for the style.

30 Days of Blogging: HOW TO FIND A STYLIST

How To Find A Stylist

When it comes our tress finding the right Natural Hair Stylist, Loctician, or Braider can be crucial.  When we look good we feel great!

Maria, Master Pioneer
Natural Hair Stylist

Client:

If you see someone with a Natural Hair Style you like, make sure to stop and ask them for the stylist's information.   You can use Google and use Style Seat to find someone in your area.

Your initial phone call should determine whether you want to go in for a consultation.

Do they have a Social Media presence.

Make sure you are clear on the style you want.  You can text the picture, show them pictures or have stylist show you pictures.  Make sure the picture you are shown is their own work.  I have see my own work on other stylists card and promotional material!

How well do they explain the process; do you feel comfortable, do you like the atmosphere of the salon?  If all check out.........you are ready make your appointment!

Stylist:

Having a website or social media presence helps when clients are trying to find you.

Know your techniques and the different variations of them, so you are better able to determine your clients needs, eg, consumers mix up Goddess Braids, Fish Tails and Ghana Braid.  All look similar but are a completely different stitch for each technique. There are quite a few different Twists; Two Strand Twists, Comb Twist, Senegalese Twists, etc.

Confirm type of hair you are using, whether you are providing or you need them to bring their own

Remember your work speaks for itself.  Referrals are the best, so make sure to give each client your business cards to pass out.

Have a wonderful and productive week.  Don't forget to hug and compliment someone, you never know whose day you are making.

How Soon Can I Loc My Child's Hair

Starting
You can loc your childs hair as soon as it starts growing!  I have three grandchildren who have never had their hair combed.  There hair was sectioned, two strand twisted, and left to start the locing process.  The same methods of starting, two strand twist or comb twisting apply.  You can also free form.  I recommend using a two strand twist.  Being children they play, water gets in their hair during bath time etc, this method will hold up better.  You can you either method based on texture.

Products

Shampoo and Oils of your choice.  No conditioners are used as they slow down the locing process.  Rule of thumb, is nothing rich, thick or creamy as these can cause build up in and on the loc.......Less is more!!  Gels for twisting, is a personal choice.  I used oils for twisting as I was not comfortable with gels at such an early age.  If you are making your own flax seed gels or aloe then that would be good.

Styling

Don't forget to add a style.  This helps to hold the grooming in place longer and keep locs neater.  Cover at night to hold style and prevent lint

30 Days of Blogging: Good Morning

Good Morning All:

Hope you all had a great Holiday Weekend, filled with hotdogs, burgers and fireworks!

My weekend was pretty uneventful.  I had sciatic nerve pain in my leg which had me on bed rest all day Saturday.  I finally took something on Sunday as I refuse to spend another day in bed.  Doing much better.  Monday was the perfect beach day here in Fort Lauderdale.  I had some much needed work to do around the house, so I had to pass on that.  No complaining as I got a lot done.

For those of you who went to the Essence Jazz Fes. in New Orleans I know you all had a great time.  The pictures on Fb and IG tell the stories.  I've been once and had a wonderful time.  Was also able to go again during the time of Mardi Gras.  If you have never been to NO it an experience you should have.  Awesome place!

I would like to share something and hope you all take the time to check it out.  My girlfriend's daughter launched her new You Tube channel Raising Consciousness.  It warms my heart when we see the young ones doing their thing and progressing to greatness, so please support.  Click on link to view.

Have a wonderful and productive week.  Don't forget to hug and compliment someone, you never know whose day you are making.

Locs Are So Versatile

I just love the endless creativity with Loc Styling.  If I see that a client's locs are thinning, or they just need a break from twisting, I refrain from palm rolling.  Instead they are Flat Twisted, giving the locs a new dimension.  Rose Petal Locs, yes I am so in love with them.  They give your locs life.  Extra Marley hair, was added for a pop of colour.

Don't forget we offer Loc Maintenance/Repairs, Loc Styling, and Loc Extension Classes.

How Long After a Relaxer Can I Braid My Hair?

A minimum of two weeks! Your tresses are weak after a relaxer, so to minimise on breakage allow your hair to recoup before adding undue stress.  If you are due for a relaxer and need to braid your hair, that's the perfect time.....new growth is great!"

This is a great Protective Style and was created on Natural Hair using Afro Kinky Hair.  Senegalese Twists were rodded and dipped in boiling water to achieve curls.  Twists can be done on relaxed or natural hair.  Based in Fort Lauderdale, call now for your next appointment, 860.523.4844
